One of Heinlein's more controversial titles, Starship Troopers was written in response to Eisenhower's decision to suspend US nuclear testing at the height of the Cold War. A veteran of the US Navy, Heinlein held opinions forged by his experience in the military which informed much of his writing in the novel, among them corporal and capital punishment.
