John Dryden
Poems on Various Occasions; and Translations from Several Authors, Now first publish'd together in one Volume [contemporaneously bound together with] Fables Ancient and Modern Translated into Verse from Homer, Ovid, Boccace & Chaucer with Original Poems
Very Good. Item #6433 London: Jacob Tonson, 1701 and 1700, respectively. Combined Edition. Folio; Poems [xx] + 232pp; Fables [xxxx] + 566pp. Cambridge-style calf binding: raised spine bands, originally with gilt ornaments in each compartment; upper and lower panels are tooled with central concentric decorative rectangular frames and ornaments in blind at the four frame corners, per Cambridge-style convention. Panel edges tooled.Binding has undergone substantial, professional, cosmetically discreet recent repairs, and is now robust. Pastedowns show signs of previous, less discreet repairs having been removed. Nearly all gilding has been lost from spine ornaments and panel edges; micro-vestiges still detectable. Title page is now well preserved but shows its 300+ years. Textblock is moderately foxed throughout; pages robust.Twelve pages of laudatory poems solicited by politick Mr. Dryden-from the likes of William Congreve, Nathaniel Lee, and Joseph Addison, among others-precede his famous Preface to Absalom and Achitophel: "The true end of Satyr is the amendment of Vices by correction. And he who writes Honestly, is no more an Enemy to the Offender than the Physician to the Patient, when he prescribes harsh Remedies to an inveterate Disease." Did you hear that, Ye Media Pundits of Anno Domini 2020?.
