London: Used with wear and tear. Allen and Unwin. 1956, 57, 57 impressions 5,5,3. A lovely first edition set, above average condition jackets and books for the age. These early impressions are increasingly hard to find without much more wear and tear, especially to the dust jackets. This set is in exceptional condition compare with how they are usually found. You can tell the books and jackets have been kept together by the uniform wearing and aging patterns. Now an extremely rare set, especially with the first ever slipcase! This set has had no restoration and alterations as is happening more and more. We feel these early editions are more authentic as-is, with warts and all. None of the usual tattering to jacket spine ends and corners, though darkening to the spines, with lighter color spots (see photos). This darkening is from exposure of light and damp to the spines as the covers are protected when on a shelf. FotR is 1956 5th impression has a 7th impression dust jacket. (It was normal practice for the publisher to spare dust jackets, earlier and later). There is no serious flaws to any of the books. However, what makes this set so special is the slipcase. Autumn of 1957 was the first time you could buy all three titles together, with the first ever produced slipcase. This is the true first edition set as you could never buy the first three printings of each book together, (1,1,1) as they were printed over nearly two years.
