Science for Vietnam (introductory document) [with] Science for Vietnam newsletter, nos. 1-2, 5, 8-10
Chicago: Science for Vietnam, 1971. A rare group of material published by Science for Vietnam, a Science for the People-affiliated organization focused on supporting Vietnamese scientists. The group was founded in Chicago in 1970 following a trip to Hanoi by Univ. of Chicago professor/activist, Richard Levins, and describes itself as "one way in which scientists can give practical as well as symbolic meaning to a people-to-people peace with Vietnam" (p. 1 of the introductory document). The group published 10 issues of its newsletter - six of which are included here - with early issues edited by the Chicago collective and later ones by Madison and Minnesota collectives. Each issue was devoted to SfV's conferences and projects, requests from Vietnamese scientists, reports on Vietnamese life, and bibliographies of research meant to aid Vietnamese scientists who were working with outdated textbooks. In issue 10, the editors state, "In true collective style, it was decided that Newsletters will be released as soon as we receive four (4) stencils worth of publishable material. We did not receive any stencils this time..."We can only surmise that this lack of contributions continued and that the group subsequently dissolved. All newsletters mimeographed on either 8 ½" x 11" or 8 ½" x 14" sheets, 10, 6, 6, 10, 12, 10 p. The introductory document is five sheets printed on rectos only. All issues folded for mailing, light toning, but an about Near Fine grouping. No copies of any issue currently in commerce (May, 2020) with only Univ. of Michigan & Wisc.
