TROLLOPE, Anthony.
The Vicar of Bullhampton. With 30 Illustrations by H. Woods.
London: Bradbury, Evans, and Co., 1870. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles in gilt to spine, decorative motifs in black to spine and boards, gilt vignette view of Bullhampton Church and Vicarage to front board, pale yellow endpapers. Slight wear to corners, the binding otherwise firm and notably unfaded, rear hinge tender, occasional spotting and edge-splits to pages, mostly from careless opening, else internally unmarked and untoned; a fresh copy. 23 wood-engraved plates (including the frontispiece), and 12 in-text illustrations (including the title vignette). First edition in book form of this novel about a fallen woman, her wrongly accused son, and a crime-solving vicar. As pointed out by Sadleir, there are actually 35 illustrations rather than the 30 stated. It was first published in 11 monthly parts from July 1869 to May 1870; the first edition in book form was published in April 1870, followed by Harper's pirated US edition of May-June 1870, and Lippincott's authorised first US edition of June 1870. Sadleir, Trollope 33. [Attributes: First Edition]
Bookseller: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB. [London, United Kingdom]
