Published Antwerp 1576 : Rare 16th Century theological work 'Enchiridion Militiae Christianae - Ad novitatem vitae, quae in Christo Jesu est, perfecte instituens, cunctis fidelibus perquam utile, ac necessarium.' A Militant Christian handbook for Knights/Soldiers by Joannes Justus Lanspergius, German Carthusian Monk and ascetical writer. Collation: Complete with all pages, 168/Language: Latin/Binding: Vellum; tight & secure/Size: ~4.5 in X 3.25 in (11 cms x 8 cms) Good condition considering it was printed almost 500 years ago. This devotional includes lessons on living peacefully with others, the Holy Mary, developing virtue, gratitude and various other prayers and spiritual excercises; designed to help one live a life imitative of Christ. The Latin word 'Enchiridion' refers to a handbook, the first of which was written by Epicetus in the 2nd century. Other similar works include 'Enchiridion militis Christiani' The Manual of a Christian Knight, written by Dutch Scholar Erasmus in 1503, first published by William Tyndale in 1533. While Latin started to become less and less popular during this time, it was still used internationally by the Warrior class Literati, from Scots Gallowglasses to Polish, Hungarian Hussars.
