Oz Magazine Original Art Work Jerry Rubin Yippie Joe Stevens Issue 31 1970
1970. A piece of original artwork for the Oz Magazine. From the collection of the late great Felix Dennis, poet, publisher and, Oz Magazine editor. This work was created 1970 for issue 31 of Oz, the 'Yippie issue'. This collage was created to accompany an article on Jerry Rubin who, at the time was touring Paris and London. The picture is collage of works by various Oz artists, each artist work is credited: Joe Stevens, David Nutter, Helix, Sid and Andy. Joe Steven and David Nutter are both noted counterculture photographs, Nutter was the only photographer present at John and Yoko's wedding in Gibraltar, The phallic images are by 'Andy' and 'Sid' - probably pseudonyms. The image of the seated nude women is credited as 'unknown'. The image of hippie, possibly Jerry Rubin, is credited to Joe Stevens. Joe Stevens went on to tour with Paul McCartney's Wings. He photographed rock musicians and bands throughout the 70s and 80s, notably David Bowie, the Sex Pistols, and The Clash. The collage contains 3 original photographs and two lewd pen and ink drawing. Helix's picture of medusa is copied, the mirror has been pasted on. The title of the article reads 'Yippe cult murders rock Paris... DeGaulle dies of drug overdose'. The caption on the printed works reads, 'When you think, think in thousands. Next morning you'll start to feel the same:'. 44.4 x 29.3 cm. the collage has some creases and handling marks. The two phallic images are coming away and will need to be stuck down again with archival tape. Art work from the Oz magazine is exceptionally rare.
