Very rare collection of Elizabethan homilies, sermons and prayers in the 1637 Black Letter version of the original 1562 issue. Topics include drunkenness, whoredom, swearing, willful rebellion, falling from God, and more. Includes DDD5 leaf, which contains "A thankes-giving for the suppression of the last rebellion," referring to the English Civil War. Perhaps most interesting about this copy is the large period hand sculpted royal seal in full iron attached to the upper board. Inside the tome, Thomas Major has signed and stamped the book on the front and rear endpapers; investigating Thomas shows that he was in fact the sculptor of the seal, and with good cause- Major (1720-1799) was the chief sculptor and engraver to Frederick, Prince of Wales; he was the first engraver recognized by the Royal Academy of Arts, and was chief seal engraver to the King himself!
