COOPER, Thomas
1560 1st ed Thomas Cooper Chronicle Elizabethan English Black Letter Crowley
Londini: Thomas Berthelet, 1560. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. In 1549, Thomas Cooper, a 16th-century English chronicler, completed the late Thomas Lanquet's 'Chronicle'. Known now as 'Cooper's Chronicle', this book covers the history of the known world through the mid-1500s - content that was first organized in 'Carion's Chronicle'. Controversy surrounded the 'Chronicle' shortly before this 1560 edition was published. English poet Robert Crowley, without permission, greatly altered the 'Chronicle' much to the dismay of Cooper. Cooper issued this first edition, greatly expanded, and removed all of Crowley's alterations. This edition also included a prefatory section 'An Admonicion to the Reader' in which Cooper noted Crowley's failure as an historian without mentioning Crowley's name directly. After the success of this and the 1565 editions, Crowley was never republished as a competitor. (Lotito). Like many chronicles, this book includes topics of ancient Greece and Rome, Julius Caesar, Charlemagne, wars against Jerusalem, and hundreds more. However, the appeal to this work is one of the first black letter printings of an English chronicle ever printed! This example includes 16th-century, handwritten notes in the margins. It should be noted that Shakespeare was known to have based many of his poems and plays on the work of Thomas Cooper. [Attributes: First Edition]
