1641 Leicester Commonwealth Anti Puritan Robert Dudley Elizabethan England
London: 1641. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The "Leicester's Commonwealth", first written in 1584, was anti-Puritan treatise which vehemently attacked Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, for his political and religious views. According to the STC, "'Leycesters common-wealth' is a Catholic recusant political tract against Elizabeth I's government, in particular the pro-Puritan policies of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who is portrayed as an amoral opportunist. It went through many stages and forms, both in manuscript and in print, and is most well-known by the title 'Leicester's commonwealth'. It was first printed on the continent in 1584 with title "The copie of a leter, wryten by a master of arte of Cambridge, to his friend in London'." This 1641 edition was the first to feature the new title. Authorship of this work has been attributed to various authors including Robert Parsons, Thomas Rogers, and William Cecil.
