Polybios - Isaac Casaubon, 1670: Polybiou tou Lykorta a Megalopolitou (2 vol)
1670. Polybiou tou Lykorta Megalopolitou Historian ta Sozomenal/Polybii Lycortae F. Megalopolitani Historiarum libri qui supersunt (complete in 2 volumes) by Isaaco Casaubono [Isaac Casaubon], Johannis Janssonii a Waesberge & Johannis van Someren, Amstelodami [Amsterdam], 1670, vellum, 1816 pgs. Accurante Jacobus Gronovius. Size 5 X 8 in. Side-by-side Greek and Latin. Casuabon was a classical scholar and philologist, regarded by many of his time as the most learned man in Europe. The author spent vast labor on this book about Polybios, a Greek historian of the Hellenistic period, yet left it unfinished. There are 16 chapters + "historia excerpta" + "excerpta de virtutibus et vitiis" + "fragmenta e variis scriptoribus" + "synopsis chronologica" + "poliorceticus" + "in aeneam notae.". Frontis, both books, of Greek battle scenes. Good, original vellum, soiled, with library volume number at spine of vol. 1, hinges tight, pages with occasional light foxing. Rather nice condition for age. EARLY EDITIONS NOT FOUND THROUGH ONLINE SEARCH SERVICES. I have been engaged to disburse a wonderful collection of antique books belonging to a 91 year-old Italian gentleman. His library was assembled by his father, grandfather and other family members of generations past. It includes many leather-bound classics in English, Spanish, Italian, French and German, with one highlight being books of Cuban historical interest. SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS FOR MORE LIKE THIS.
