Martin, Clara Barnes; [Bryant Bradley], photographer
Mount Desert, On the Coast of Maine. Sixth [and final] edition.
Portland: Loring, Short and Harmon, 1885. 12mo, original green cloth over boards. 115 pp., [7] pp. of ads, 5 mounted photographs, folding 18" x 14" map on onion skin paper inside lower cover pocket. Early ink ownership inscription of one Robert Hall as well as early private accession "No. 34" in red ink on flyeaf. First issued in 1867, this fine guide-book went through six editions, only four of which (the third through the sixth) were illustrated with photographs. The five images in this sixth edition are different from those which appeared in the preceding editions. The photographs are large half stereoviews, and although no credit is given to the photographer, they are known to be the work of Bryant Bradley (1838-1890), originally from Cornish Maine, who lived and worked in Bar Harbor in the 1870s and 1880s. Bradley's work is generally of high quality and the present images are no exception. The views included herein, by title, are as follows: Spouting Horn, Eagle Lake, Cathedral Rock, Otter Cliffs and Somes Sound,--West Shore. Also included in this volume is a crisply engraved folding map entitled Mt. Desert Island Maine published in Washington, D.C. by the U.S. Coast Survey in 1875. It is uncolored, measures 17 3/8" x 14 7/8" plus margins, and is printed on high quality onion skin paper bearing a watermark reading in part "Crane & Co. Dalton, Mass." The author of this volume, Clara Barnes Martin of Portland, was a respected figure in literary circles of the day who was fluent in Russian and regularly reviewed Continental literature for the New York Evening Post.
