Ruding, Walt
An Evil Motherhood. An Impressionist Novel
London: Elkin Mathews, 1896. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. x, 100pp., 20pp list of books in Belles Lettres by publisher Charles Elkin Mathews. Dark blue cloth hardcover with embossed bronze title and drawn spider web on front cover. Cloth binding has some light spotting, light shelf wear, and some wrinkles to cloth joints. Untrimmed page edges. This copy has 2 frontispieces separated by a tissue guard. The first illustration in the book by Aubrey Beardsley is often considered a "self portrait" and is the illustration cited in the description as first edition, second issue. The second illustration by Beardsley is the scarce "Black Coffee" illustration of two ladies at a counter with a cup of coffee in front. The original first edition, first issue of this book had the extremely limited "Black Coffee" illustration. The glossy Black Coffee illustration was produced by the "Swan Electric Engraving Company." Laurence Worms blog "Bookhunter on Safari" March 21st, 2013 writes according to Mark Lasner's Beardsley bibliography (item 94), "Lasner cites other authorities suggesting that just six copies (rather than twelve) were bound up with the earlier frontispiece, describes a genuinely later issue containing both frontispieces, and fills in the rest of the detail." Very good. Item #4659. [Attributes: First Edition]
