[Carte-de-visite of a 19th Century African-American Minister, unidentified]
[New York State?, c.1860s-1870s]. CDV. Albumen photograph on card stock with gilt ruled edges; no back mark; very good. Found among papers from upstate New York, an intriguing carte de visite photograph depicting an African-American minister. The unusual full-length portrait shows a black man standing dramatically; with one hand pointed heavenward and the other to hell. Before him is a chair upon which sits a thick book, possibly a Bible. In the pocket of his black great coat their appears to be a rolled up manuscript, perhaps a sermon. Photographs of this era depicting African-American clergymen are rare. A compelling and unusual image.
