London: The Diners Club/Hamlyn Publishing Group Ltd, 1974. See description. VERY RARE CENTENARY FIRST EDITION 4 VOLUME SET of THE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLES by Sir Winston Churchill published by Diners Club/Hamblyn Publishing Group, London, 1974, hardcover The very scarce CENTENARY FIRST EDITIONS of Sir Winston S. Churchill's Major Works as issued by Diners Club UK was a lavish production done in Switzerland. Incredibly, each volume was issued in 1974 at £30 each (or $70.00 in 1974), a huge sum of money in 1974 (adjusted for inflation would be £315 or $400.00 today). Published in dark red pebble full maroon Moroccan grained leather with black title panels on spines, with raised bands, large script gilt initials WSC on spine and front board, extensive gold tooling on front and around inner dentelles, maroon satin moiré endpapers, black satin place marker, tipped in frontis portrait. All edges are beautifully gilt. Spine with 3 blocked leather labels for the Author, Volume title, and Centenary First Edition, with WSC also blocked on the spine. Size is 22.3cm by 14.3 cm. Books have very obviously never been read. Bindings on all volumes are very tight, pages very clean and bright with no foxing of any kind. A few small marks on the gilt edges as usual. Each volume has a bookplate on the inside board with Jourdan heraldry (evidently previous owners). The four volumes are: Volume I; The Birth of Britain Volume 2; The New World Volume 3; The Age of Revolution Volume 4; The Great Democracies Please take a good look at the photos to evaluate condition.
