Chicago: Lakeside Press. Indians Of Southern Mexico Frederick Starr 1899 1st Limited Edition Signed VG+ STARR, Frederick. Indians of Southern Mexico: An Ethnographic Album. Chicago: [Privately printed for the Author at the Lakeside Press], 1899. 32 pp. (descriptive letterpress), 141 gravure plates on maize grounds (some with two images per plate) of Native Americans (portraits, costume, scenes, landscapes), made from negatives of original photographs taken by Charles B. Lang and Bedros Tartarian. Oblong quarto (27.6 x 35.5 cm), publisher's original navy blue cloth, lettered in gilt on upper cover and spine. A few light spots on spine and upper board, end leaves lightly foxed, scattered light foxing to text, but overall a very fine copy in the rare plain dust wrapper (wrapper in original condition w/loss). Front cover - top right corner bump. Partial gutter tear inside front cover. Due to the heavy weight of the text block, the book is usually found with text separated or separating from the binding or rebound. A very scarce work, especially in such fine condition. First edition, limited edition (560 numbered and signed copies, this being #371 of 560 printed on heavy plate paper, numbered and signed by author).
