1844 "Loss of the Mary Rose" with Original Relic Wood Covers - Henry VIII
England: 1844. Offered here is a collection of four books related to the Tudor Warship Mary Rose: 1. The Narrative of the Loss of the Mary Rose at Spithead, July 20 1545, From Original Manuscript - Relic of the Mary Rose, published in 1844, by Samuel Horsey, Portsea, is a ninety six page narrative of the loss of the Mary Rose. The leather spine is inscribed "Relic of the Mary Rose" with the wooden covers made from actual wood from the Mary Rose. 3.6 x 2.1 inches. The last engagement of the Mary Rose was in the Solent against a French invasion fleet in July 1545. With Henry VIII watching from Southsea Castle on the mainland, she sank with the loss of almost 500 men. The wreck lay undiscovered for nearly 300 years until its accidental discovery by fishermen in 1836. At this time pioneer divers John and Charles Deane explored the wreck and recovered relics from the ship. A history of the ship's demise was first published by Samuel Horsey in 1842. The inside front page carries an original label reading: "The Wood from which the Covers of this Book are made, was purchased Nov. 12th, 1840, at Mr. Dean's Public Sale of Articles recovered by him from the Mary Rose. A certificate of which may be seen on application to the Publisher. The Public may confide on its being a Genuine Relic of that unfortunate Ship". 2.
