Hermosa Beach: MDA Pubs, 1990. Limited Edition. Octavo. 40 pp. Number 46 of 50 numbered copies, noted in blue ink in Pettibon's hand on the front cover. Lithograph printed. With elaborate emendations in ink to the back cover by the artist: Pettibon has added hatch-marks and lines to the gorilla's fur and face, has crossed out the last printed word "LIE" in "THEY TAUGHT ME TO LIE" and replaced it with "TYPE" and has added an extensive handwritten text: "AND DOING THIS WITH HIS PEC- / ULIAR SENSE OF THE WORLD EVER / IN VIEW, IN SEARCH OF AN IN- / STRUMENT FOR THE ADEQUATE / EXPRESSION OF THAT, HE BE- / GETS A VOCABULARY- / THE WORDS HE WOULD SELECT, AND STILL / MORE OF THE WORDS / HE WOULD REJECT / WERE THE DICTIONARY / OTHER THAN JOHN- / SON'S - TARAZAN / KNOWS IT WELL / (YELL)." OCLC locates three copies: MoMA, MOCA, and SFMOMA. Hints of rubbing and a few spots of soiling, else near fine in side-stapled illustrated printed wrappers. With added artwork by the artist. Rare.
