Woodcut engraved vignettes and portraits throughout. Dedicataion with woodcut engraved portrait of the author, "Platina", following main title page. Individual title pages for "Historia delle vite dei pontefici del platina" and "La Cronologia Ecclesiastica". 19th century, full leather. Gold tooled borders on front and back boards. Six git compartments on spine. Raised bands on spine. Some small chips to leather on front board. 1cm chip to bottom corner of rear board. Front board's joint are rubbed, edges show signs of shelfwear. A 4cm area of the preliminaries show signs of wormholes, however this in no way jeopradises the text's legibility. Pages 135-146 have suffered from browning, though once again the contents are entirely legible. Otherwise contents are in fantastic condition; clear, bright and complete. 1607 edition of the seminal reference work on papal history. Bartolomeo Platina (1421-1481), historian, political theorist, and author of a best-selling cookbook, began life as a mercenary soldier and ended it as the head of the Vatican Library. He composed this work, a biographical compendium of the Roman popes from St. Peter down to his own time, whilst serving under Pope Sixtus IV. The work critically synthesized a wide range of sources and became the standard reference work on papal history for early modern Europe, reprinted dozens of times and translated into a number of languages.
