WILKIE COLLINS - The Woman in White 1861 First English one vol edition, revised
1861. WILKIE COLLINS The Woman in White This is a 'New Edition' (i.e. First English one volume edition, revised and corrected) published by Sampson Low, Son & Co., London in 1861. With a steel engraved pictorial title page engraved by H. Adlard after J. Gilbert and a frontispiece with a mounted portrait photograph of the author. This edition includes a 2 page 'Preface to the Present Edition' which is here first published. The bottom corners of the frontispiece and engraved title page have a water stain, not affecting any other pages and the first few leaves are a little rounded at both corners. Internally there is a little marking here and there: I show a scan of the worst which is a partial ring mark affecting two leaves. Generally though this is a pretty clean copy, virtually free of any foxing. This copy had been rebound in leather sometime in the past, though at the time I bought it only the top portion of the spine remained. It was bound without a front fly leaf, and also lacking a half title page, which is called for. It was subsequently bound by Atkinson Bookbinders (Salisbury) in full maroon morocco with five raised bands, gilt lettering on green labels and gilt decoration on the other panels. With a gilt border on both covers and green marbled endpapers. The top edge retains the gilt from the earlier binding. In fine condition. From the Preface: 'The Woman in White' has been received with such marked favour by a very large circle of readers, that this volume scarcely stands in need of any prefatory introduction on my part.
