RAPIN, Rene (1621-1687), [GARDINER, James, translator].
Rapin of Gardens. A Latin Poem.
London: Printed for Bernard Lintot, 1728. [Jesuit Poetry]. REVISED THIRD EDITION. Octavo (20 x 13cm), pp.liv, 200 [10]. With a copper engraved frontispiece portrait of the translator, a folding engraved plate of a formal knott garden, and an engraved plate for each of the four books, being Flowers, Trees, Water and The Orchard. Recently re-backed using the original contemporary mottled calf boards, with a new calf spine to-style with raised bands and gilt titles to red label on spine. Marks to front pastedown where labels have been removed. Blue ink numbers written to the base of the title page. Corners lightly repaired, with moderate wear to contemporary boards. Very good overall, restored to an attractive usable condition. Taking its inspiration from a passage in Virgil's 'Georgics', this collection of Latin poetry was first published by the Jesuit scholar as 'Hortorum Libri IV' in 1665. Gardiner, son of the Bishop of Lincoln, first published his English translation in 1706.
