Folding colour sketch map of 'The Yangtze Basin showing Mrs Bishop's Route.' 2 volumes: 2 black & white photographic frontispieces and 114 black and white photographic illustrations by the author and numerous illustrations throughout the text. Dark blue decorated cloth, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, corners bumped and lightly rubbed at extremities, head and tail of spine just starting to fray, spines slightly darkened lettered in gilt, front boards lettered in gilt and gilt stamped with an attractive Chinese pagoda style gateway motif on each volume. Volume I: xii + 410pp and folding map and adverts. Volume II: vii + 365pp plus 2 pages of Putnam's books of Travel advertisements. Prior owner's name J. B. Perkins written in sepia coloured ink and dated 1899, which is interesting because the published date is 1900. The contents are sound and very clean. Overall an attractive copy of this important book. The famous female traveller's final major work which describes her journey through China that ended in 1897. A fascinating account liberally illustrated with equally fascinating photographs that show a China now long gone.
