"It seems to me that man has engaged in a blind and fearful struggle out of a past he can't remember, into a future he can't foresee nor understand. And man has met and defeated every obstacle, every enemy except one. He cannot win over himself. How mankind hates himself." The book has stains to the front and rear boards, and very light general wear. There are three lending library stamps to the front paste down and end page and the identical three to the rear, otherwise the interior of the text block is free of stamps and writing. The binding is square and is still firm. The dust jacket has been partially laid down onto brown backing paper. There is a small chip at the heel of the spine, soiling, rubbing and wear which is most notable around the folds. All together a surprisingly solid example despite its history. The jacket is the correct first printing jacket and is entirely unrestored. An ever increasingly uncommon book with the jacket. The author's first book after Tortilla Flat and likely his first socially important and challenging novel. In Dubious Battle begins the author's 'Dust Bowl Trilogy' which also includes Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath.
