New York, N.Y: Charles Webster and Company, 1885. Please see all photos and full description below. Awesome estate find. First edition two volume set of Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant, published by Charles Webster and Company (founded in 1884 by Mark Twain) and printed by J.J. Little. The volumes were published in 1885 and 1886 respectively. Grant finished his memoirs shortly before his death in the summer of 1885. Some comments on the biography from the time of publication: "No Union list of personal narratives could possibly begin without the story of the victorious general. A truly remarkable work" (New York Times). "Grant's memoirs comprise one of the most valuable writings by a military commander in history" (Eicher 492). I am not a book expert, but have sold a lot of antique books over the years and believe this set to be in very good to near fine condition if not better (please look at all of the photos provided to make your own determination as to condition). There are no interior markings. The spine/binding remains very tight. There are a few minimal scuffs on the covers commensurate with age and apparently very minor use. Very minor wear and bumping on the corners and tailcap. The hinges are fully intact. I did not find any foxing and virtually no toning. All plates and fold-outs are in excellent condition. Tissues over frontispiece engravings in both volumes are in tact. These are the actual volumes that you will receive.
