2020. Recession:Depression for Some, Opportunity for Others Due to current condition in the world , it is possible that we are facing a recession in the near future in US. As of 3/16/2020, Stock market lost 30% of its value in one month and many investors looking for alternative way to protect their investments during this times. People believe that during a recession, collectible are also loosing their value. Although this might be true for low grade collectibles, the Rare and unique collectible usually appreciate in value. I was reading statistics from Heritage Auction house after 2008 stock market corrections, and they indicated that Number of successful bidders was up by 11% Average lot value was up by 8.49% Number of lots actually sold in each weekly auction is up 39.95% Total sales volume was up 43.34% Collecting is a passion and a distraction to a better place, a better quality of life then we can get from say for example, following stock price everyday. What fun is that? Plus, collectible values will NEVER go to zero as many stocks have. In 2009, I put together a Wizard of Oz price guide that listed prices of Oz books at the time. Revisiting Prices in 2019, ten years later, reveals that Oz books prices for 1st edition 1st printing copies in very good to Fine condition in average tripled in price. Looks like these first edition Oz books in very good or better condition at least mimics US stock markets investment returns. In 2009 Dow Jones was at 10,000 level and reaching almost 30,000 in 2020.
