Notable for the wealth of plant lore (chiefly European), with numberless scriptural and poetical references throughout, as well as the color plates (from the author's illustrations). BMC, volume 20, page 856, columns 538-39; Sitwell, Great Flower Books, page 127 (gives dates of 1850-1857 for the first 5 volumes; "... many times reprinted ... A very popular Victorian work"). 7 volumes complete; uniformly bound in purple pebbled cloth, spines stamped gilt and blind, covers ruled and decorated in blind, light yellow endpapers, t.e.g. Sunning and wear to spines and extremities (chiefly to heads of spines); slight rubbing and browning to covers; previous owner's rubberstamp on front free endpapers of all volumes (with pencil signature in volume 5); slight starting to few leaves (particularly in volume 4, at front); slight internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to preliminaries and generally unaffecting plates); in all an extremely serviceable, fairly tight and well enough preserved set, illustrating nearly 2000 different species in all.
