1890. Legendary Antique Edition "Encyclopedic Dictionary" Brockhaus and Efron St. Petersburg, Russian Empire, made in Printing house of the joint stock company Brockhaus and Efron, - a universal encyclopedia in Russian, published in the Russian Empire. Publishers: Brockhaus (Leipzig) And Efron (St. Petersburg) Condition - used antique. Please see actual photo for conditions. Few volumes have stamps on back cover from antique shop. Several are signed on title page. 3 volumes have partially dettached spine. Missing volume 51. Unique antique thing! Pre-revolutionary period of the Russian Empire. In 1889, at the initiative of Semyon Vengerov, the owner of one of the St. Petersburg printing houses, Ilya Abramovich, signed an agreement with the German publisher F. A. Brockhaus to translate into Russian the large encyclopedic dictionary Konversations-Lexikon, published by this publishing house. Initially it was supposed to be limited to the translation of this edition, but only with a more detailed description of issues relating to Russia. Many outstanding scientists and philosophers of that time were invited to the editorial staff: Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev, Vladimir Sergeevich Soloviev, Semyon Afanasyevich Vengerov, Andrei Nikolaevich Beketov, Alexander Ivanovich Voeikov and many others. From this point on, the encyclopedia begins to be replenished with original articles, and the focus is on issues related to the history, culture and geography of Russia.
