[DECORATIVE ARTS] [MANUSCRIPTS] [FRANCE] Eight manuscript notebooks and dozens of manuscript pages of detailed notes of a French student of weaving and textile production

Eight composition books, each filled completely with text and drawings, measuring about 18cm x 23cm, plus another hundred or so leaves of manuscript, each either 33cm x 25cm or 44cm x 29cm. Paper was cheaply produced; much of it is chipped along the extremities, with some minor loss to text in a few places, although most of what is perished is likely comprehensible within context. Overall the contents are in good to very good condition. A meaty, rich grouping of neat and legible lecture notes from a student of weaving at Lyon, France. It is slightly unclear whether these notes are entirely dictated from a teacher, or whether some of them are the original thoughts and ideas of the writer. Lyon was for centuries an important center of fine textile weaving, and this student was deeply involved in that occupation. Almost every imaginable aspect of the manufacture and maintenance of silks and other fabrics are covered in these notebooks, along with many dozens of hand-drawn illustrations (some rather impressive), and numerous fabric samples, pinned into the paper. We have made no effort to transcribe or translate the material, all of which is in French.
