In latin. 8vo bound in contemporary calf. 690 pp. First edition published in England (issue with Beza's name on the title-page and the addition of "impensis Herculis Francisci" to the imprint.). Woodcut printer's device on title and woodcut at end. Contemporary calf binding with central gilt oval ornamental stamp on both covers. Some cracking to hinges; boards sound. Edges gilt. Missing front flyleaf. Two early owner's inscriptions on title page and a later printed collector's label on front paste-down. Text clean and legible. Historical Provenance: Scarce edition of the Psalms with extensive commentary by the French Reformed Protestant theologian, Théodore de Bèze (1519-1605), who played an important role in the Reformation as a disciple of John Calvin. After Clément Marot's death in 1544, John Calvin asked Beza to complete his French metrical translations of the Psalms.
