The Group
Harcourt, Brace, and World, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 378pp. A very good or better copy, bright and clean, with the spine gently cocked. In a very good dust jacket with a quarter-sized chip at the base of the spine, else rather nice, with the spine completely unfaded. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by McCarthy to Douglas Blazek [she spelled it "Blazeck"] on the front free endpaper. Blazek was a poet associated with the Mimeo Revolution, well-known in the circle of d. a. levy, Robert Crumb, and others. While McCarthy enjoyed a successful career in political writing, she is perhaps best known for "The Group," a feminist novel which follows the lives of eight graduates of Vassar College (then a women's college) during the repressed 1950s. In 1978 the Franklin Library reprinted the book in a signed limited edition, which is common in the marketplace; however we found no signed copies of the first edition in commerce as of this listing, nor in auction records in the past 25 years; as such, surprisingly scarce, and all the more so with a pleasing literary association. Very good + / very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]
