1798 - THE HOUSE OF WISDOM IN A BUSTLE: A POEM DESCRIPTIVE OF THE NOTED BATTLE LATELY FOUGHT IN CONGRESS Copy owned by historian Benson Lossing, and inscribed by him January, 1862, and given to his friend, William Menzies. In researching this book, and William Menzies (1810-1896), I found that Menzies' collection of books was sold in 1876. The only auction reference I found on this title is in Joseph Sabin's CATALOGUE OF THE BOOKS MANUSCRIPTS AND ENGRAVINGS BELONGING TO WILLIAM MENZIES - 1875. The catalogue lists 2251 lots, with this book being Lot 982. Written in pencil, very small, on the verso of the front free end-paper is 982 underscored. You must read the introductory NOTICE in the catalog - this was an amazing collection, including 54 letters from George Washington. Sabin says in the beginning of this catalogue that he has had the privilege of compiling many catalogues, but he has not up until this point "had the pleasure of preparing a catalogue in which almost every book possesses special importance..." Later he said, "This collection was sold by the compiler in November, 1876, and realized nearly $50,000, being $9,000 more than it cost. It was the finest library ever sold in the United States." Actually spelled on the title page - C-ng-fs - to protect that august body. By Carey, James.
