xxvi. 778 pp. plus maps. 7cms. thick. Number 546 of 675 copies. Original quarter blue vellum blue canvas boards lettering and designs in gilt on the vellum. Uncut edges top edge gilt on the rough. Boards slightly darkened. Gift inscription to the f.e.p. opposite the title page from bookseller Alan Thomas to his son-in-law who had accompanied and guided Thomas and his wife on a week long trip to Constantinople. The is also a letter from Thomas explaining some history of the book as well as a separate note and postcard from Thomas and his wife Shirley. Also laid in is a copy of the prospectus and the Nonesuch News for Autumn 1935. Some spotting to fore-edge. A tight clean copy with just a few minor marks and scratches to the binding and a small area of abrasion at the base of the front board. A very pleasing copy. As Thomas says in his letter This is one of the best productions of the Nonesuch Press printed in Nonesuch Plantin type specially prepared for this edition. It is thus the best printed as well as the best edited edition.
