Santa Rosa, California: Black Sparrow Press, 1987. Fine. Heavy repetitive daily drinking doesn't work for everyone. Nor is it the usual story of a main character in a major Hollywood film. But here we are. A film adaptation of Bukowski early rough years. A screenplay he wrote himself. A film starring Academy Award winner Faye Dunaway and Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke playing the lead drunk. The film was directed by Barbet Schroeder, a film maker with a rather remarkable career (worth looking up). By all means see his documentary on General Idi Amin Dada. Talk about swimming with he alligators. After Barfly he went on to make some big budget, mainstream Hollywood films including Reversal of Fortune, Single White Female and others. It was Schroeder that approached Bukowski and commissioned a film. The story of the film, Barfly is recounted in Bukowski's novel "Hollywood". The screenplay was not to be molested or diddled without direct approval of Bukowski. This book is the special deluxe edition of the screenplay including many photos from the making of the film. This is one of 140 signed by Dunaway, Rourke, Schroeder and Bukowski. The red silk backstrip binding signals it is one of the special, best copies. This one happens to be in beautiful condition. Included is the plastic mylar dust jacket (not shown). I only located one of these premium copies with all four signing for sale, priced at $1,500. I suspect my copy is in just a slightly sharper condition then that one.
