CHARLES DICKENS - PICKWICK PAPERS -FIRST EDITION - 1837- PUBLISHER'S BINDING! ANGELA BURDETT-COUTTS PROVENANCE - UNIQUE AND FINE
1837. For sale is a VERY rare First Edition of Pickwick Papers, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1837. A complete suite of plates by Phiz. 624p.p. Many of Smith's textual points here present. This being the scarce first edition in book-form, with the publisher's imprints to the plates. The provenance is compelling, bearing as it does the beautiful armorial plate of Angela Burdett Coutts. She was a close friend of Dickens, and she was the person to whom he dedicated Martin Chuzzlewit. Bound in a scarce and fine publisher's deluxe half Morocco, over cloth boards. To the spine are raised bands, finely tooled in gilt, and the title in gilt. Scrolling arabesques in gilt to the panels. Original marbled endpapers and page edges. Externally the spine and boards are largely bright, with only occasional extraneous wear, commensurate with age, in places. Internally it is refreshingly very clean, and and one of the brightest examples we have handled. The plates have the predictable odd spot in places. The publisher released volumes bound in cloth, half Morocco, and full Morocco. The cloth was the cheapest option for buyers of the time of printing, and then a price premium was put on the half Morocco and full Morocco. Owing to books then being the preserve of only the educated, relatively few were printed and bound, by comparison to volumes published into the C20th. The half Morocco and full Morocco being expensive at the time, resulted in fewer being produced, and therefore they are far more scarce than the original cloth is even now.
