Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1769. [FOLIO BASKERVILLE BIBLE]: The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New; with the Apocrypha: Translated out of the Original Tongues, with Annotations. Birmingham: Printed by John Baskerville, 1769-1771. Always regarded as Baskerville's magnum opus, and his most magnificent as well as his most characteristic specimen, this is the 1769 edition of Baskerville's Folio Bible. The second edition of Baskerville's masterpiece, following the 1763 first edition. Issued in parts, this copy retains the first-state title page, dated 1769. The New Testament is dated 1771. Bound in its original gilt bordered leather boards, the spine rebacked professionally with raised bands, as shown, with light fading to the gilt bordering of the boards, refreshed and with little to no wear, a true gem. Pages quite clean and fresh. All pages bound and present, including plates and frontis, bound before the title page. A massive Bible, measures roughly 17" x 11.5" x 3.75", with marbled page edges.
