Willy Ley
SIGNED Chesley Bonestell THE CONQUEST OF SPACE Willy Ley 1949 Art & Rockets HCDJ
Viking, 1949. very good to near fine in a good to very good just jacket, see photos. SIGNED by CHESLEY BONESTELL The Conquest of Space, by Chesley Bonestell and Willy Ley. Viking Press, New York, 1949. First edition, third printing, October 1949. Hardcover, dark blue buckram, embossed front cover, silver lettering on spine. Text by Willy Ley, but the 'first billing' goes (unusually) to the illustrator, Chesley Bonestell (1888-1986), who at the turn of the mid-century was already getting wide recognition for his pioneering endeavors at painting alien landscapes and the vehicles which might eventually take us there, all within reasonably realistic scientific parameters. This book (and its three sequels) have been widely and authoritatively credited with inspiring the American imagination and initiating the launch of The Space Age (And who would we be to argue with history? Collecting it makes much more sense!) This book is in very good to near fine condition although the jacket had suffered a few short tears and mild blemishes before being wrapped in protective mylar. It is inscribed and signed with fountain pen by Chesley Bonestell in the smooth strokes of his youthful hand. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]
