(Ed) - Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research - Viking Press: New York, 1941 - First Edition / First Printing - "First Published in December 1941" stated on the copyright page with no mention of later printings as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. The book has some soiling, a pair of bumps and some light general shelf wear. The boards remain straight and clean, the lettering is bright, the top stain is deep in color, the binding is square and firm and internally there is a previous owner name neatly stamped on the front end page. There is also a faint damp stain to the edge of the block which extends inward on some of the pages. The dust jacket has rubbing and edge wear with a pair of closed tears, some shallow chips, rubbing, and damping which is most noticeable to the rear. All this being said this is still a rather solid example of a shockingly uncommon and very desirable book. All illustrations and photographs are present. An early work written with Ricketts who, along with becoming one of Steinbeck's close friends, was a leader in the field of marine biology. This title spawned, but should not be confused with, the later and much easier to locate 1951 book The Log from the Sea of Cortez. Likely Steinbeck's most important work of non-ficiton.
