Jarrold, 1957. This first edition set of books includes: 1st Edition 6th impression of the fellowship of the ring (however has a seventh impression sleeve which is known to happen at print run overlaps) 1st Edition 5th impression of the two towers 1st Edition 3rd impression of the return of the king These books were printed in 1957, the quality of the books is excellent. The slipcase having protected them very well. However the dust cover sleeves have been subjected to general wear on the spines (see pics). These books are in a slipcase with no staples or visible join. The board is 2mm thick. This means it must be a very rare first edition, first state slipcase which matches the 6th, 5th 3rd impressions which were included in the first state slipcased edition. To date, very little information has been published regarding the First Boxed Edition of The Lord of the Rings. The snippets that are known have been supplied by Wayne G. Hammond: Beginning in Autumn 1957, the Allen & Unwin Edition was sold both as separate volumes and as a set J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography, p.98 Construction of the Slipcase - (Thanks to Neil Holford of Tolkienbooks) The details of the design of the slipcase were modified regularly throughout the life of the First Boxed Edition. Allen & Unwin and Jarrolds were trying to balance the need for a robust slipcase against need to keep costs to a minimum - the boxed sets retailed at the same price as the three volumes on their own.
