Rebound for the discriminating collector with supple hand dyed calf leather to spine and spine tips. The leather spine consists of five raised bands with stamped gilt print. Exquisite period hand decorated marbled paper boards and matching end papers from the workshop of world renowned paper maker, Flavio Aquilina of Napoli, Italy. Production of this paper is very limited and is decorated completely by hand. Aquilina's paper is recognized as a benchmark for quality and excellence.The original yellow endpapers have been removed and refreshed as have the 6 pages of ads at the rear of the book. The Signature mark "T" is not present as called for on page 433 (see photo) signifying a Harper's first printing. White Jacket is based on Melville's fourteen month service in the United States Navy from 1943-1844 and depicted the harsh and inhumane treatment of sailors at sea. This first edition is quite scarce today. It was one of just 4,534 copies, of which 2,042 were bound in cloth and 2,022 in wrappers.
