Novus Brasiliae Typus (Map of Brazil)
Condition: Good. Amsterdam. Good. Map.. An ornate copper engraving hand-colored map of Brazil, with North to the right. The map is circa 1640 and extracted from a French atlas, with French text on verso. Dampstains, some minor color bleeding, and toning, with worn corners and a centerfold. Of note are the inset and cartouche illustrations of naked Brazilians, cannibals, farm animals, and mythical creatures. Inset map of Baya de todos os Sanctos. A Dutch mapmaker who studied under astronomer Tycho Brahe, Willem Janzoon Blaeu purchased the plate for this map in 1629 from engravings by Hondius. Blaeu's imprint is added next to the scale cartouche.; 18 1/2" x 22 1/2".
