Pierre Bayle
Early Printing 1710 Bayle's Historical Dictionary 4 Vol
C Harper et al. Good: all four bindings intact albeit with scuffs, chips and some material loss: light and intermittent foxing: paper discoloration due to age. Complete set of M'sieur Bayle's exploration of people and ideas of his time. Bayle wrote these in response to a previous historical dictionary which he found full of errors. In writing his own dictionary of History, Bayle influenced many as his approach was both logical and a little subversive due to his Huguenot leanings. In very good condition, all four volumes have their covers intact and attached. There is some loss of material on each and the inside front and first page or so are discolored. Occasional pencil marks. Some foxing. All four have matching title pages with vignette of Athena instructing little cherubs. Bookplate inside front of James Irvine, Esq of KingCausie which is in Scotland. Very Good Condition: Folio: Four Volumes: Leather binding in very good condition with some loss of materials. Please see photos: banded and ridged spine with evidence of gilt lettering on each but only showing/remaining on two.
