NY: 1964. Hemingway, Ernest. A MOVABLE FEAST. 4to, editorial typescript consisting of 148 stamp-numbered pages, beginning with the first chapter through the end of the published book. At the top of the first page is a typed label: "Title: A MOVABLE [sic] FEAST / Author: Ernest Hemingway / Pub. Date March (Scribner." The final line is in ink. The "typescript" is on paper watermarked Atlantic Bond 20 and seems to have been reproduced by offset lithography, rather than any of the plain paper xerographic systems available at the time, giving this precedence over any previously described copied or printed galley proofs. Minor typographical and punctuation corrections appear as they were made by hand on the original. The preliminary material, including the title-page epigraph, the author's preface, and Mary Hemingway's note, was apparently not part of this version since the page numbering begins with 00001. At least two different typewriters were used. The whole is contained in a plain buff folder with a penciled note indicating that it was originally sent to an advance reader for the Book-of-the-Month Club. In this case, it was Donald Gallup, who was an acknowledged expert on Hemingway and other personalities mentioned in the book, notably Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, and other American Expatriates in Paris. This item was acquired by us from Gallup and first sold to a private collector in 1987. We are not aware of any other copy being offered for sale since then.
