Early Printing 1588 Missale Romanum Red and Black Woodcuts
Very Nice: Red and Black title page and text with mutiple small (1 1/2" X 1") decorations throughout the text: some foxing: some paper loss and occasional tear: front board off as is front endpaper facing: ex-library. Lovely missal with Gregorian calendar, order of the Mass, devotions to Mary and other important markers of the faith. Beautiful example of early book art: smooth vellum binding over solid board, red and black printed title page with religious vignettes at top and bottom of page; heavy paper, an epistle followed by the calendar of the Church with some days marked in red, general prayers, various masses for different holy days, and hymns for other holidays. Much of the book has little decorations on each page, either a vignette of a saint or a decorative capitols. In very good condition, with age appropriate paper discoloration but very little foxing: paper loss to the endpapers :(which look to be a newer addition), bookplate of Haverhill Public Library, James E Gale Fund, library markings, especially on first several pages. There is a note in pencil on the back of the loose endpaper and some numbering on the back of the next blank from the library. Otherwise, text is clear and crisp; elegant Gothic lettering in red and black, intermittent decorative woodcuts.
