1580 Saint Augustine City of God Philosophy Existence God +Mystic Spanish Vives
Lugduni: Stephanum Michaelem, 1580. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. While most-known for his work 'City of God', he also wrote many other treatises on aspects of the Christian faith. His stance on free will vs predestination and fatalism were, and still are, supported by the Catholic Church. This was because his teachings on free will are consistent with modern doctrine. 'City of God' was a response to the assertions that the rise of Christianity was the cause of the decline of Rome. In this work, Augustine discusses the existence of God and evil, an all-knowing God, original sin, and Christian doctrines. Augustine sought to denounce much of the magic and pagan worship that was rampant throughout the known world. This incredibly rare 1580 edition is notable for the inclusion of Spanish humanist Juan Luis Vives's commentary.
