Carlo Sigonio
Aldine Press 1566 T Livii Patavini Caroli Sigonii Secunda Editio Paulus Manutiu
Venice: 1566. Folio Edition (see. Below fro measure): Second edition, Paulus Manutius: Great Decorative Capitals: 1-45: Epitome, Liuiana, Scholia Caroli Sigonii. Lovely edition by Paulus Manutius, son of Aldus Manutius, of the tales of Livy with scholia or commentary by Carlo Sigonio. Sigonio's commentary was thought to be the most important due to the sheer volume of thought and commentary as well as the various argumentative counter-arguments of the era, most notably by the scholar Robertello whose work Sigonio corrected. This edition is quite hefty with three-quarter red leather over brown speckled marbling "modern" binding with a heavily ridged spine with gilt lettering in the second band. The hinges are scuffed as are the edges and corners with board showing through on all four corners as well as scuffing on the edges and scratches to the paper. Inside are maroon swirled endpapers, with some tiny tears and scuffs at he edges. The inside front gutter is cracked fully. Title page shows the printer's device of dolphin and anchor surrounded by a wreath of fruit replicated at the end of the Livy text and on the title page of the Scholia. Writing on title page, part crossed out. Some foxing and some browned pages. Chipped corners to the block and edges. Great decorated capitals depicting scenes from mythology intermittently heading various chapters. A very attractive and interesting copy of Livy's histories. Measures 13" x 9 1/4" x 2 1/2".
