AELIANUS, Claudius
Aeliani Variae historiae libri XIIII.
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Claudius Aelianus, or more commonly known as Aelian, was a 2nd-century AD Roman rhetorician and philosopher who was well-versed in both Greek and Latin linguistics. Aelian had only two well-known works - 'On Animalia' and 'Variae Historia.' The latter is a collection of ancient anecdotes and sketches that describe natural wonders and mythological customs. He describes death and burial customs, Greek art, dress and costumes, food and drink, famous athletes, pagan worship, fly fishing, and more! This rare 1618 printing is printed in parallel Greek and Latin. [Attributes: First Edition]
