London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1873. In the original publishers cloth binding, and signed by the author. Number of a limited edition set of 1000. A leading Victorian art critic, as well as a noted watercolourist, Riskin was particularly influential in the second half of the Nineteenth Century and up until the First World War, the aftermath of which saw his reputation dampen somwhat until the publication of numerous academic studieas of his work, where he was recognised as having predicted interest in environmentalism and sustainability. Here, Ruskin's considerable expertise are a the forefront. The first volume argues, in the form of an extended defence of J.M.W. Turner, that painters that were then emerging from the tradition of picturesque were superior at the art of landscape than the old masters. Initially written as a standalone work, subsequent volumes would be written later. The second volume, originally published in 1846, placed emphasis on the symbolism in art, especially regarding nature; the third is of 'many things' in the author's own words; whereas volumes IV and V concentrate on the depiction of mountains and leaves, clouds and relativity respectively. Contains eighty-four illustrative plates and engravings, collated complete. In decorative cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound, there is some marking and wear to the boards, as well as wear to the extremities, backstrip and joints. The spines are also somewhat rubbed.
