Ioannis Cassiani eremitae De institutis renuntiantium libri XII. Collationes sanctorum patrum XXIV.
Rome: Ex Typographia Dominici Basae, Anno MDLXXX, 1580. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. 6 ff., 767, [1] pp. Contemporary French calf with printed "paisley" designs on front and back covers. Lacking front endpaper; binding soiled, foot of spine repaired. EXTREMELY CURIOUS SIXTEENTH-CENTURY "PRINTED LEATHER BINDING," decorated in the textile manner with the designs printed directly on the leather. Compare De Thou's copy of Bafius, Lyons, 1549 (but bound much later, ca. 1601-1603, as is attested by the presence on the binding of his monogram entwined with that of his second wife), subsequently in the library of Raphael Esmerian (First Sale, no. 115). * PROVENANCE: Early ownership inscription of the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice (Paris) and the Ramsgate Monastery (Kent) with library ink stamps and bookplate.
