Scarce second edition of the first "Decade" volume of João de Barros Asia, a notable and one of the best historical compilation related with the first Portuguese world exploits and the "Age of Discovery" during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The first "Decade" volume is crucial work for the study of the first Portuguese explorers and explorations (mainly in Africa and Asia). Barros' First Decade contains early descriptions of African tribes and kingdoms. It accounts for the Islamic presence in North Africa, and Asia and accounts for the military campaigns between the moors of north Africa and the Portuguese. Barros´s describes the first European sea voyage to India, the first European encounters in India, diplomatic negotiations and military campaigns, wars against Muslim states in Asia, the discovery of Brazil, Colombo's negotiations with the D. João II, the kingdom of Pegu (Birmania), Ormuz, and so on. João De Barros (1496-1570), was a scholar and erudite in various areas, but it was as a historian that he gained higher projection. Barros' Asia was a result of a life effort and constitutes his main work achievement. Using the same model of the great Roman historian Titus Livius, Barros' divided his "Asia" in three "Decades" (a fourth Decade was finished and published many years after João de Barros' death).
