DOUGLASS, Frederick
The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass. Written by Himself 1893
1893. DOUGLASS, FREDERICK. The Life and Times of Frederic Douglass. Written by Himself. Copious illustrations Large 8vo, original smooth dark blue cloth; Boston: De Wolfe and Francis, 1893. A Very Good Copy of a very elusive book. It took me nearly 25 years to find a copy that was not 1895. De Worfe and Francis must have re-issued the book on the death of Douglass in 1895 This is the last of Douglass's four narratives: 1845, 1855, 1881 and the present. There has always been some confusion as regards the publication date of this book. Some book sellers and librarians have dated it as 1895. It is definitively 1883, and an early ownership on the verso of the portrait frontispiece backs this up: "Charles O. Dewey, March 1, 1893." In trying to pin down who Charles O Dewey might have been, I found a number of middle schools named for him. This copy belonged to Civil Rights attorney Victor Rabinowiz. With his name on the FFEP, and his notation on the rear end paper.
